The piano traces its origin to the early 1700’s and is not, as some might think, descended of reeded keyed instruments such as melodians. It is a unique instrument, as it allows tonal quality to be determined not by the musician but rather their instrument’s maker. Oddly enough, this makes the piano a simple instrument to play and an impossible instrument to master. Pianos are generally divided into two types, those being uprights and grands. With their elongated cabinets stretching up to 10 feet, grand pianos from such companies as Fazioli and Baldwin are considered the greatest pieces the makers of these massive instruments are known for. For years, the Baldwin piano company was the only serious competition to Steinway as a maker of concert quality instruments.
Today there are numerous quality brands of pianos that are perfect for the home. Many musicians feel that Kawai pianos offer a more brilliant tone than that of any other maker and at a fraction of the cost of the more famous brands. While grand and baby grand pianos definitely make a stronger decorative arts statement, an upright piano can create an equal quality of sound. Upright pianos from makers such as Kawai are a fabulous cost effective alternative for those desiring superb tonal quality, while lacking space for a grand piano’s footprint.
